-->

With the release of macOS 10.15 Catalina,Office 365 for Mac and Office 2019 for Mac support macOS 10.15, 10.14, and 10.13. Moving forward, as new major versions of macOS are made generally available, Microsoft will drop support for the oldest version and support the newest and previous two versions of macOS.

  • Previous versions of Office, such as Office 2010, may work with Office 365 with reduced functionality. This compatibility with Office does not include the Office 365 F1 plans. Annual commitment required. Custom domain $12/year after the first year. Only new Office 365 for business subscribers eligible.
  • Jun 04, 2019  Applies to: Office for Mac, Office 2019 for Mac, Office 2016 for Mac. Apple has long encouraged application developers to adopt the 64-bit runtime environment, and we've been hearing from customers that 64-bit versions of Office for Mac are desirable to enable larger address spaces, better performance, and new innovative features.

Note

Office 365 ProPlus is being renamed to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. For more information about this change, read this blog post.

Symptoms

When you double-click one of these file types:

  • Word document (.doc or .docx)
  • Excel (.xls or .xlsx)
  • PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx)

You may experience any of these problems:

  1. The file icon is blank or displays an incorrect image.

  2. The file does not open.

  3. You receive this error:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

  4. You receive this error:

    <file name> not a valid Win32 Application

Cause

These problems occur when the association between the file and the corresponding application is missing.

Resolution

Before you continue with any of the methods in this section, we recommend that you check for multiple Office installations on your computer. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Type appwiz.cpl in the Search box, and then press Enter.
  2. Check the list of currently installed programs for multiple installations of the Microsoft Office suite.

Uninstall Microsoft Office On Mac

If there are multiple installations of Microsoft Office installed on the computer we recommend that you follow the steps that are listed in Method 2 of this section. If there is only one installation of Microsoft Office on the computer, follow the steps that are listed in Method 1 of this section. Only follow the steps that are listed in Method 3 if you still experience the problem after you have attempted the first two methods or you have installed Microsoft Office Trial suite.

Method 1

If there is only one installation of Microsoft Office 2010 on the computer, follow these steps to repair Microsoft Office:

  1. Type appwiz.cpl in the Search box, and then press Enter.

  2. Select the Microsoft Office 2010 suite you want to repair and then click Change.

  3. Select Repair, and then click Continue. You may have to restart your computer after the repair is completed.

Method 2

If you have more than one installation of a Microsoft Office 2010 suite on your computer we recommend that you uninstall the Click-to-Run based suites to avoid file type association issues. You will have to uninstall the Microsoft Office Starter, Microsoft Office Click-to-Run or Microsoft Office 2010 Trial suite and repair the traditional MSI (Microsoft Installer package) based installation of Microsoft Office 2010:

  1. Type appwiz.cpl in the Search box, and then press Enter.
  2. In the Currently installed programs list, select Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010, and click Uninstall.
  3. You will see a prompt requesting to uninstall your selection. Click Yes.
  4. Follow the uninstall instructions, and then restart the computer.
  5. Type appwiz.cpl in the Search box, and then press Enter.
  6. Select the Office 2010 MSI-based suite that you want to repair and click Change.
  7. Select Repair, and click Continue. You may have to restart your computer after the repair is completed.

Method 3

Note

This method may not be a permanent fix to the file type association problem that you are experiencing. We recommend that you follow the previous methods first and only try these steps if you continue to experience the problem.

If you only have one of Microsoft Office Starter, Microsoft Office 2010 Trial or Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 installed on the computer follow these steps to manually reassociate the file:

  1. Right-click the Microsoft Office file that you want to open.

  2. Select Open with, and then click Choose default program....

  3. In the Recommended Programs list, select Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler.

  4. Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
If you only have a Microsoft Office 2010 MSI (Microsoft installer package) based suite installed on the computer follow these steps to manually reassociate the file:

  5. Right-click the Microsoft Office file that you want to open.

  6. Select Open with, and then click Choose default program....

  7. In the Recommended Programs list, select the appropriate program to associate with the file.

  8. Click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
Your file icon should now display the correct image and it should open in the correct Microsoft Office program.

Question: I upgraded to Catalina on my Mac and now Microsoft Office won’t work; what can I do?

Answer: One of the side effects of tech companies taking their platforms to new levels is that, often times, older software programs will no longer work.

The most recent version of Apple’s MacOS — known as Catalina — is having a major impact on those who upgraded without understanding that their older 32-bit programs would no longer run.

If your version of Microsoft Office is older than Office 2016 v15.35, you’ll have to choose from a variety of costly or time consuming and complicated options.

If you have Office 2016, you should be able to upgrade to the 64-bit version through Microsoft’s standard upgrade process if for some reason it hasn’t already been updated.

Option 1: Purchase new software

You can purchase the Office Home & Student 2019 bundle from Microsoft for $149.99 or the Office Home & Business bundle for $249.99. The primary difference in the two packages is the business version includes Outlook.

Option 2: Start renting Microsoft Office

Microsoft is trying to get users to convert from a single purchase package that will eventually expire to their subscription 'SaaS' (Software as a Service) platform known as Office 365.

This means you either pay monthly ($6.99 for Home & Student) or annually ($69.99 for Home & Student or $99 for Business) from now on.

Option 3: Switch to Google’s offerings

If your needs for productivity software are very basic, you may find the free options available from Google through a Google Drive account to be acceptable.

It includes Docs, Sheets and Slides which are Google’s version of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, although nowhere near as powerful. Though it’s a web-based tool, there are options for editing your documents when you are offline.

Option 4: Revert back to Mojave

There is no simple way to go back to the previous version (Mojave), so this option is very time consuming and complicated, as you’ll have to wipe your hard drive and reinstall everything. Depending upon which version of the MacOS your computer shipped with, you may have to use an external hard drive to complete the reversion.

How to check for 32-bit programs

For those who are considering an upgrade to Catalina, a good first step is to see what 32-bit programs you are currently running to determine if they are important to you or not.

Run Microsoft Office On Mac

To do this, click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner, then on 'About This Mac' and then on 'System Report.' When the report opens up, scroll down to the 'Software' section and click on 'Applications.'

An alphabetical list of applications will appear with various details about each one. If you scroll to the far right, you should see a column that says '64-Bit' and the words 'Yes' or 'No' for each application. To make it easier to see the Application Name and whether it’s 64-bit or not, drag the 64-bit header from the far right to the far left so it’s right next to the 'Application Name' column.

Mac Version Tracker

Go through the list looking for your critical programs to make sure they are 64-bit or to see if a 64-bit version is available from the creator of the program before upgrading to Catalina.
